German pianist/saxophonist Kühn has just released a stately album of deep jazz featuring Archie Shepp and guembri player Majod Bekkas. But, four decades ago, Kuhn was spitting out some very fiery sounds indeed. Albums like 1970’s Paris Is Wonderful were pure, raging free-jazz, but this rare date from just a few years later found him slotting 100% into heavy jazz-rock/fusion mode. On high-velocity tracks such as ‘Travelling’ the combination of Toto Blanke’s taut electric guitar, Polish violinist Zbigniew Seifert’s high wire extemporisations and epic strings arranged and conducted by Kühn’s brother, Rolf, approximate the velocity and scope of early Mahavishnu Orchestra. Produced by legendary Krautrock mastermind, Conny Plank, this is serious business.
