Although perceived first and foremost as a drummer, Chambers reminds us on this listenable album that he is one of the great multi-instrumentalists in jazz. A highly-skilled percussionist, he also programmes synthesisers astutely and his focused work on vibraphone and marimba are two more rhythmic-harmonic additions to his bow. Double-bassist Coleman and pianist Germanson are able accompanists, but it is very much Chambers who takes centre-stage by way of carefully woven patterns of polyrhythms, with mostly short, sharp riffs on congas and keys wrapping around arrangements that reflect the leader's long running history of playing anything from swingtime to no time via backbeat-led funk.
‘Underground (Railroad) System’, steeped in the strong gospel tradition, is a highlight of the session, but Chambers throws an impressive curveball by closing with the 10-minute solo piano piece ‘Landscapes’. A series of gentle but resonant explorations of a strong theme, the composition is slightly akin to ‘Maiden Voyage’ by Herbie Hancock, an artist with whom Chambers worked in the 1960s, but has its own sense of majesty and grandeur.
