Genre-defying New York based guitarist Joel Harrison has been a prolific yet unpredictable leader of recording projects of late. He tied together Americana, bustling post-bop and Third Stream for the extended compositions on the CD Search earlier this year, and always features a versatile selection of top-drawer jazz musicians brought together with a purpose in mind. This is a quintet he co-leads with the lesser known Roman double bassist Lorenzo Feliciati and includes the exciting Vietnamese, Seattle-based trumpeter Cuong Vu – who has made some standout cutting edge recordings of his own besides a notable tenure in Pat Metheny Group last decade – the articulate Oslo-based, classical piano virtuoso Roy Powell and long time collaborator, the global roots musicinfl uenced percussionist Dan Weiss. Harrison's wistful country blues-inspired and eerie soundscapes hang over the session but the writing is shared between the two leaders while on a couple of tenderly brooding originals, Vu's characteristic eerie noise and effects treatment is used to good effect while elsewhere he is more lyrical. Harrison's dreamily ambient blues jazzrock guitar (although he occasionally gets more riff-y) meanwhile weaves in and out of the themes, pulling the group textures together cohesively.
