Whither the piano trio? Possible paths forward for one of the most fundamental sound-making units in jazz have been much debated across the past decade, with the likes of e.s.t., The Bad Plus, Brad Mehldau and [em] all pointing the form in uniquely different directions. It’s fair to say that this disc doesn’t add much to that debate. Joey Calderazzo – who first appeared on the scene in the late 1980s in the company of Michael Brecker and who currently stars in Branford Marsalis’ dazzling quartet – isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel here; but boy, he and his collaborators sure can make it spin faster when they want to. Recorded live at Daly Jazz in Missoula, Montana, the set comprises a well-selected mixture of originals and standards. ‘The Mighty Sword’ gets things off to a nice, bright, swinging start, before Keith Jarrett’s ‘Rainbow’ shows off Calderazzo’s more lyrical side. The best is saved for last: a 17-minute take on Paul Motian’s ‘Trieste’. It’s as restlessly inventive as anything any of the jazz trio’s more radical practitioners have come up with of late.
