A typically modest title from an artist now seamlessly entwined with the ECM label. Abercrombie has long eschewed the rock sounds of his youth, but even by his standards this is a filigree light release, subtly lyrical, gently tough and rich with an interplay, notably with Copland, that has a gossamer feel to it. The tone is set by the opening ‘Joy’, that steals upon us like a wisp of cloud and then is gone before we can grasp it. The sense of fleeting beauty barely perceived is further emphasised by there being only 48 minutes of music, so you savour every precious moment. The waltzy ‘Sunday School’, for example, features a raft of changes that only comes through the decades of collaboration this outfit shares. Abercrombie's material dominates, but Copland's fragile ‘Tears’ provides a neat contrast to the guitar man's sweeter melodies, while Miles' ‘Nardis’, played ethereal yet earnest, likewise impresses.
