Prestige Records' boss Bob Weinstock never wasted anything, and that included expensive reels of magnetic recording tape and precious studio time. Weinstock wasn't into paid rehearsals either, being hooked on a one-take philosophy. That's why not many alternate takes have ever surfaced, if initial attempts were rejected then the tape was instantly re-wound and re-used. Furthermore, when Red Garland failed to make a quartet date then the remaining threesome were ‘encouraged’ to plough on and recorded ‘Like Someone In Love’, ‘I Love You’ and ‘Trane's Slow Blues’. So it wasn't uncommon for leftover's to be bundled together to make up an album. Hence ‘Lush Life’ – was assembled from three different dates. The trio recordings have been explained while ‘Lush Life’ itself was done and dusted (along with three bonus tracks) a couple of weeks before Miles convened his quintet for the Milestones sessions. Now this is a personal choice, while many are obsessed with full-steam ahead ‘Trane playing much faster than his heartbeat to the point where his eyes bulge, I've always had a preference for his approach to ballads. For confirmation, investigate his sensitive interpretation of both ‘Lush Life’ and ‘Like Someone In Love’, which are among his most accomplished in this mode.
