Another bootleg, no doubt – certainly not direct from the Danish Radio tapes, but from the broadcast that saw ‘Impressions’ faded for a studio announcement. And previously issued, of course – most recently on the Gambit label, and probably with the same notes as here. It’s still possible to get excited by live recordings of this quartet, but this might not be the best place to start.
A point of interest for aficionados and collectors may be that the 1963 European tour varied the repertoire of previous visits by including material recently recorded officially, such as ‘The Promise’ and ‘Afro-Blue’, and some relatively infrequent live versions of ‘Naima’. You would have certainly been knocked out, or sideways, if you heard this Copenhagen performance in the flesh. As you would if you’d followed Coltrane to the Montmartre club afterwards, when he sat in with Roland Kirk’s group who were recording there for Mercury – sadly, no aural evidence of that seems to have survived.
