I've never quite taken to Pizzarelli's effete-sounding, Sinatra-lite vocals while fully realising that I'm in a minority, probably, of one. What I do recognise is his guitar facility and the commercial reality of his success. This time, Concord have pushed the budget to new heights with small group orchestrations, mostly by pianist Goldings who is present on many of these post- Beatles McCartney numbers, plus sundry guests and backing vocalists. If some of the songs verge on the sentimental, there is some more lively fare like ‘Heart Of The Country’, with just a trio, Goldings heard at proper length, and ‘Hi, Hi, Hi’ with added horns. Otherwise, the Getz-like Allen gets a look-in here and there but overall, I can't see much attraction here for the regular Jazzwise reader. Still it will probably sell in bucket-loads to Pizzarelli's steady fan base. File this under ‘middle-of-the-road’ pop and look for your jazz singing elsewhere.
