Running through this varied and absorbing record are Johnathan Blake's reflections on and tributes to his late father, the violinist John Blake Jr, who died in 2014. After a solo drum memory of fellow percussionist Lawrence Leathers, the band launches into ‘Passage’ which has a long alto solo by Wilkins at its core, but an equally strong and direct contribution from Virelles. This piece is a direct celebration of the elder Blake, its extrovert style intended to reflect his personality.
The next generation are not neglected either, on ‘Muna and Johna's Playtime’ dedicated to Johnathan's teenage children. With a piano left hand ostinato running through the track, Virelles’ right hand plays a perky yet sonorous keyboard line that interacts with the alto sax, before the vibes pick up the action. As the album progresses, the band explores different rhythmic areas. Virelles’ composition ‘Tiempos’ takes us into tango and Creole territory, with subtle textural interplay between piano, bass and drums, whereas ‘West Berkeley St’, set up by Douglas’ bassline, has riffs and patterns inspired by Motown, ending with echoes of the real speaking voice of Blake's father.
The most beautiful, reflective moment of all comes in the ballad ‘Out of Sight, Out of Mind’, where Ross's vibes create a mood that the band picks up and develops, showing that space, dynamics and thoughtful interaction lie at the heart of this thoroughly exquisite album.
