A long time part of Bonnie Raitt's band, and a fine contributor to Rickie Lee Jones’ current and superb album, Cleary steps into the spotlight for the first time in a decade as far as his own recording goes. He's calling in some impressive favours because he's got Allen Toussaint to arrange the brass, John Porter (Buddy Guy/Keb Mo’) on production and an array of musicians culled from the Neville Brothers, Soulive and his own touring band. No surprise then that GoGo Juice serves up a gumbo of sweaty New Orleans funk'n'blues. When the band grooves, as on the Dr John vibed ‘Bringing Back The Home’ or the zippy title track it's all most amiable, although the slow soul stylings of ‘Step Into My Life’ lumber a bit. Cleary, if he's reminiscent of anybody, summons the spirit of Robert Palmer, another Brit who was (understandably) seduced by the allure of The Big Easy. And if GoGo Juice gets you thirsty for more of The Meters or Toussaint then it's served its purpose. But check out Rickie Lee who's been revived by a move to New Orleans too.
