Jon Corbett is a name one knows from any number of other associations – LJCO, John Stevens, Dudu Pukwana – without really knowing him as a player in his own right. My shame then and perhaps yours. Kongens Gade goes some way to redressing my ignorance at least. This is an extremely fine album of free improvisation featuring some wonderful interplay between these three musicians. My respect for Moholo-Moholo is undying and his ability to support and drive other performers is ever acknowledged but both Corbett and Stephens need no great encouragement. This isn't “storm in a teacup” improvisation, it's far more subtle and bolder than that. A paradox perhaps but these four tracks seem as much concerned with control as with release – more Miles than Trane maybe. The listener hears and feels every nuance, every little twist and turn and sees each new colour more brightly than the last. Brought out the Oliver Twist in me – “Please sir, I want some more?”
