Having gigged with stars such as Erykadh Badu, Buster Williams and Kurt Elling, and picked up good press for his auspicious 2018 debut album Vision Ahead, 30 year-old drummer Jonathan Barber is very much a young man on the rise.

This follow-up sees him lead a sharply drilled band on original material that draws on a wide range of influences, with Barber perhaps inadvertently squaring the circle between the likes of Brian Blade, Pat Metheny and Robert Glasper. Which means that there are very poignant atmospheres and moods as much as there are vividly evocative, sometimes dreamscape themes, the best of which comes in the coda of ‘Find My Way’, which would be a suitable outtake for any of Blade's Fellowship albums. This is not a solo-heavy set as strong melodies and interplay are well to the fore. A few of the pieces may have benefited from trimming, and there could have been a greater burst of energy towards the halfway point. Having said that the brash, brawny rock edge of ‘Son Of Hartford’, and the rhythmic hopscotch of ‘29’, with its jumpy piano parts drawn from drum patterns, are proof of a versatility that should serve Barber well in the future. In any case this is good fare from a musician whose future looks bright.
