It was only a matter of time before Norwegian saxophonist Kjetil Møster found his way onto the RareNoise label. Over the last few years, both have shown an ongoing fascination with mixing ecstatic jazz and out-rock – Møster on riff-heavy solo albums like the recent Inner Earth, and RareNoise through a roster of genre-stretching artists such as Hungarian drummer Balázs Pándi. Here, Møster is teamed with more Hungarians, in the form of avant-rock power trio JÜ, for half a dozen crushing jazz-rock jams that seem intent on sucking all the air out of the room. Unsurprisingly (and as with much of Møster's recent solo work), the influence of King Crimson looms loud – particularly on the opening track ‘Dear Johann’ with its nippily unpredictable prog rhythms and searing guitar solo. But there are some less obvious echoes on this album, too. ‘Bhajan’ has baritone sax chugging over a bubbling bass trance-riff informed by North African Gnawa music; and ‘Morze’ touches down on the slow, crawling doom plod proposed by Seattle's Earth. Careful with this one. It might put your back out.
