Well, the third album from a trio who play around with the mystic quality of the number three kind of had to score a three-star rating really didn’t it? It would be easy to bracket Jü in that Euro prog noise context which Rare Noise often explores. Certainly this Hungarian-based trio have a love for coruscating rock and frantic drum driven big sounds vaguely reminiscent of King Crimson in one their industrial phases. There is a gentler side, as on the meditative ‘Oak’.

There’s also an avant jazz side which evokes (very) early Ray Russell in his I Ching phase as on ‘Cerberus’. But what, to a degree, lifts III beyond the usual is the addition of Gyorfi’s vox. Moreover, although Hungarian herself, she’s also embedded in Indonesian gamelan and folk musics. These extra colours and the sheer intensity of the band’s attack compensates for the longeurs and a delivery that doesn’t always match their ambition.

But, hey, a band’s reach should always exceed its grasp or what’s a heaven for?
