A record that exudes a life force a hothoused young virtuoso would struggle to find in music school, Filaments has that indefinable imaginative dimension you can't learn, buy or force. No college can teach it; they can only be nice to you and show people how to play with stimulating books. The first track, ‘Grey Light, Green Lily’, has that humanity, the loosely pinned on vocals from Shelly Tzarafi (although it's Alexa Barchini who writes all the lyrics on this album of Shore's tunes) over an appealing melody line. It's the easy stand out, and because it's first the album peaks quickly, only faltering a bit after the half way mark. Shore, in his twenties, originally from Providence in Rhode Island now New York based, released his debut For Away Places in 2009. Innocent sounding and unworldly, the lyrics may be a bit too soppy but they're part of a bigger ambitious wordless picture on other tracks. Ex London-scene bassist Phil Donkin comes off well, and Rosenwinkel fans will flock to tracks one, two and five, particularly the first of these. Shore himself reminds me of London pianist Alex Hutton, a romantic soul, his playing full of little pleasures, much as Shore provides.
