Women working in the field of avant-jazz and improv are still a comparative rarity, so credit’s due to Tyneside’s enterprising New Jazz & Improvised Music label for releasing this album.
Designed for broadcast through venue PA systems before, during and after live concert performances at the 2024 NEWJAiM festival, this music has now taken on a life outside of the confines of the event.
Recorded live at Highfield Trinity Church, Sheffield in one four-hour session, the compositions are all semi-structured improvisations, using predetermined ideas, but with enough space to improvise and respond spontaneously to the recording space’s natural reverb and extraneous noises (such as traffic outside). Along the way Day draws upon choral and folk music, minimalism and artists such as Eno, William Basinski and Pauline Oliveros; the result is less the ‘lull’ of the title than a pause for thought. Fascinating and contemplative.
