This third album from vocalist Julie Dunn essentially picks up where her polished second album What's It All About (2007) left off. Presenting a 12-track collection of (mostly) standards, it finds the singer at the top of her game, investing everything she sings with subtle shadings and heartfelt lyricism. Standouts include a dramatic ‘Out Of This World’, a bracing ‘Well You Needn't’, plus the great ‘A Felicidade’, one of three songs penned by de Moraes/Jobim for the film version of Black Orpheus. The singer contributes two nicely contrasting originals, the gentle lilt of ‘Lullaby for Birdie’ and the rapid-fire ‘Mangled’. Once again, Dunn's band features the brilliant playing of Tony Coe on clarinet and soprano sax and pianist John Horler. The fine rhythm section of bassist Alec Dankworth and drummer Winston Clifford completes the exceptional line-up. Needless to say, Horler's arrangements are full of ear-catching detail, conjuring up varicoloured moods that range from the exuberant (‘My Favourite Things’) to the plaintive (‘The Shadow Of Your Smile’).
