There's saudade, subtlety and feeling aplenty in this fine sixth album from the London-based Australian vocalist Karen Lane. The judiciously chosen tracklist ranges from well-loved classics such as the Jobim/de Moraes album opener ‘Chega de Saudade’ and Bruno Martino's ‘Estate’ to lesser-known gems such as the Jobim-penned title-track, which sees Lane and her first-class musicians stripping back the orchestral and choral layers of the original to an intimate quintet arrangement. Lane's winning interpretation of Luiz Bonfá and Antônio Maria's iconic bossa nova ‘Manh¥ De Carnival’, originally written for the 1959 film Black Orpheus, features an expanded textural palette with the welcome addition of violinist Saskia Horton (Lane's eldest daughter) and cellist Simon McCorry. Singing in both Portuguese and English, Lane's mellifluous delivery shines most brightly in two alluring down-tempo songs, ‘Caminhos Cruzados’ and ‘Moon and Sand’, both of which appear to hover magically in the air like a heat haze, with Luft's shimmering guitar chords in the latter adding immeasurably to the overall effect.
