We have the great Karin Krog to thank for this exceptional collection of Tadd Dameron songs seeing the light of day again. It was Krog’s idea to reissue tracks from Dedications (1985) and If You Could See Me Now (1996), both of which featured Krog and Georgie Fame in the company of the Norwegian jazz pianist and composer Per Husby’s orchestra, which included the stellar talents of Chris Potter, Scott Robinson, John Surman, Grady Tate and more. Presenting sumptuous arrangements by Husby, On A Misty Night brings together five songs apiece from both albums, with standouts including Krog’s gorgeous waltz-time take on ‘I’m Never Happy Anymore’ and a luxuriant ‘If You Could See Me Now’ based on Dameron’s original arrangement, plus Fame’s energising ‘Accentuate the Bass’, for which he appended new lyrics, and a sparkling, joyous duet on ‘Good Bait/Ladybird’. The addition of two previously unissued tracks, ‘Fountainebleau/Trane’ from a 1983 studio session plus a live version of ‘That’s The Way It Goes’ from the 1984 Molde Jazz Festival, are a welcome bonus.
