There's a long tradition of blind and visually-impaired jazz musicians, from Art Tatum, Lennie Tristano and George Shearing through to Ray Charles, Diane Schuur and Vanderlei Pereira.
Into this illustrious fold comes Londoner Katriona Taylor, who has lived with visual impairment since the age of seven. Formerly a lawyer, she decided to follow her dreams and become a jazz singer. To date her CV includes a number of her own albums, stints with the likes of George Benson and the James Taylor Quartet, and she also finds time to teach, act as a vocal coach and even do voiceovers.
Her fifth album Blind Passion combines her own (rather impressive) soulful, latin-tinged compositions with covers of standards by the likes of Duke, pop tunes by Leon Russell and her friend Jools Holland; as well as takes on songs made famous by blind artists like Schuur, Stevie Wonder and The Doors (via José Feliciano). As a singer, Taylor has a sultry, smoky voice that never sounds overly smooth or forcedly ‘seductive’ – she's a versatile vocalist who can pay tribute to Nina Simone and Diana Krall. One to watch, methinks, and catch, once the live scene gets going again.
