Last Dance comes from the same sessions in March 2007 that produced the best-selling Jasmine, released in 2010. This second volume of spontaneous music “made on the spot,” has that same fresh, newly minted feel that made Jasmine so compelling ’ but with a slight difference. On Jasmine the performances were tightly focussed; here the performances seem inclined towards a looser, more spontaneous feel. Once again the material comes from the jazz standards and American Popular Song repertoire, with love songs well to fore. The jazz standards comprise Thelonious Monk's ‘'Round Midnight’ and Bud Powell's ‘Dance Of The Infidels’ but it is how Jarrett unearths musical gems in the microscopic corners of songs like ‘My Old Flame’, ‘My Ship’, ‘It Might As Well Be Spring’, ‘Everything Happens To Me’, and ‘Every Time We Say Goodbye’ and how Haden responds to Jarrett's sheer creative élan that makes Last Dance and its predecessor Jasmine stand out. In fact, after listening again and again to this album it's impossible to escape the conclusion that Jarrett might have inspired Haden to some of his finest work in decades.
