Kenny Warren's puckish phrasing and brittle tone place him in a lineage that begins with Don Cherry. This album is bookended by folksy trumpet frolics and a cavorting riff from woody double bass – the opening ‘My Moments Subtle’, features melodic stabs and breathy asides; ‘One Room in My Mind’ short melodic runs and breathy sustains. ‘Pen in Hand’ finds Warren channelling his inner Don Cherry over fast free-bop swing, ‘House Plants Off’ ups the tempo with blurts of sound while ‘Finally a Breeze’ starts with a wheezy parp, roams freely and coalesces into a lyrical theme. The most closely written piece, ‘Brain Phone Wired’, moves from elegiac to spiky, scattering fragments of sound into acres of space and quotes Ornette's ‘Lonely Woman’. The most tightly structured, ‘The Air Conditioning’ is a mosaic of melodic cells delivered in unison.
