An artful alliance of two of jazz's more accessible guitarists, Duets bears curious comparison to the recently released Brit-based alliance of Oxley and Meier. The latter pair dare to explore guitar sonorities while still being eminently listenable, all from self-penned material. Eubanks and Jordan inevitably include bankers, covering ‘Summertime’ (actually a solo from Eubanks) and ‘Nature Boy’ (with Jordan featured) as well as ‘Blue In Green' and Thad Jones’ ‘A Child Is Born’. Sound but safe. And to lap up the contemporary dance audience they stroll around an Ellie Goulding number. The jams are a little feistier: ‘Old School Jam’ is just that, a dirty little funker whose spirit could've been spread thicker across the whole album. Jordan's technique still boggles, but the shock of the new is long past, so it's Eubank's bedrock blues that gives this release its grunt and soul. But Oxley and Meier still get my vote.
