You Are Here as a band were assembled by Figes specifically to celebrate the music of Bristolian Keith Tippett and the musicians and bands associated with him such as Elton Dean, Dudu Pukwana and King Crimson.

So, it’s fitting that there’s a strong Avon element to the band, notably from the ever under rated Peter Judge. But this is no ‘tribute’ band: Figes’ arrangements while respectful, breathe fresh life into what were already challenging, muscular pieces. ‘Cat Food’ that many may remember as a TOTP frippery (Tippett was King Crimson’s MD in the early 1970s) gets a sharper arrangement, tight with intent. ‘Sweet FA’ brags a bluesy swing with Figes excellent above Blomfield’s chording.

‘I Wish There Was a Nowhere’ starts rockish with Figes again splendidly Coltranesque but breaks down to a bluesish solo from Judge before Figes returns in soulful mood. Tippet would approve, as indeed would Mingus whose attitude let alone music is an uncredited theme running throughout this intimate, live in the studio release. You Are Here may elicit past heroes but it’s four-square in the present.
