Not strictly speaking a public release in that it’s an ‘official bootleg’ from the King Crimson Club (like the Reader’s Digest for aging proggers). It does serve though as a splendid appetiser for what will be a raft of live releases that will keep Crims fans happy, especially Brits who only have two UK dates to savour during the band’s Euro tour. Apparently a virtually unedited capture of a gig from last year, marking Fripp’s return from his touring retirement, the band appear more bedded down than on the leaden Live at the Orpheum, although the three drummer front line is never going to skip gaily along. Even three thumpers can’t replace one mighty Bruford on ‘Red’. That said, Collins’ welcome return provides a range of colours, reviving songs like ‘The ConstruKtion of Light’ that didn’t feature wind instruments before. But for old school Crimbos it’s the bands’ revisiting of ‘Easy Money’ and climactic material from their first album that will thrill. Against all odds the band continue not just to evolve but astound.
