Like God's eyes in your wing mirror, the Crims box sets just loom larger with each release. Yes, much of the live material here emerged on The Great Deceiver, and life may seem too short for a 21-CD box set, yet for many Crims fans, this is the set to get as it compiles 10 concerts from their legendary (not a word lazily applied in this instance) 1974 tour of the USA and combines it with the monster that was Red. Like previous US tours, the psychological toll on Crimson was mortal; the band had all but imploded by the time the survivors Bruford, Wetton and Fripp recorded what many assumed would be the last Crimson album. But what a fury of creation ensued: has any rock/improv bass/drum combo ever locked down as terrifyingly as Bruford (still run through with spirit of Jamie Muir) and John Wetton? Their power had already burned off Cross, and even Fripp had to crank it up even further to compete. In his own phrase, he had “to lead the band from the back” as the rhythm duo bestrode the stage as beat behemoths. This is big stuff. Look at what it did to Kurt Cobain.
