Since their self-titled 2014 debut, Norwegian power trio Krokofant have made a good fist of keeping blazing 1970s-style jazz-rock alive in much the same way that fellow countrymen Elephant9 have for organ-driven prog. In fact, for Krokofant’s last album, 2019’s Q, they were joined by Elephant9’s keyboard wizard Ståle Storløkken (also known as co-founder of eerie improv unit Supersilent), plus roughhouse bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (one third of garage-skronk unit The Thing).
The team-up was such a success that they’ve returned as the same quintet for this latest, serving up another barrage of high-energy tunes written by guitarist Tom Hasslan.
Five albums in, Hasslan and saxophonist Jørgen Mathisen have mastered the kind of precision unison you might more naturally expect to hear played on twin guitars, while Hasslan’s melodic themes are wrapped in a slick glossiness somewhat suggestive of mid-1970s Canterbury bands such as National Health.
But it’s in the extended jam sections that they really burn, with Håker Flaten and drummer Axel Skalstad hunkering down into a dark, relentless chug over which guitar, sax and organ take turns soloing. Here, Storløkken is the main attraction, rolling out a huge, cavernous Hammond sound that’ll set your flares flapping.
