Led by saxophone player Alexey Kruglov and electric guitarist Jaak Soaar, this jazz-infected selection of Russian composer Pyett Tchaikovsky's greatest hits is intended to commemorate the great man's 180th anniversary. Here the quartet valiantly tackle such memorable favourites as ‘Waltz of Flowers’ and ‘Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy’(from The Nutcracker), together with extracts from Swan Lake and his Fifth Symphony. A similar method to John Coltrane's treatment of a show tune like ‘My Favorite Things’ is adopted here where, after establishing the main refrain, the composition is taken for a ride into the unknown. In this case, however, what might have seemed to be a good idea on paper evolves into a nauseating mashing together of slickly performed classical music and jazz, with neither style managing to successfully establish itself. Instead the quartet sounds creatively hobbled by the sheer weight of the subject that it has decided to shoulder.
