Kühn, who is something of a closet saxophonist himself, seems to have found a part of his undiscovered self in saxist Alexey Kruglov, a sometimes wild, tempestuous spirit that perhaps reminds him of his own youthful exuberance. Now in his 70th year, Kühn's achievements are rightly being celebrated by ACT, who have produced some of his finest latter-day work and this album surely joins them. Kühn appears galvanised by the saxophonist's energy (Kruglov is regarded as one of top young musicians in Russia) and the pianist arranged this recording session shortly after their first public performance together. Recorded in just four hours, we are told that most of this album comprises first takes, and there is certainly a feeling of spontaneity, risk taking and at times exuberance about these tracks. Except for two Ornette Coleman originals (Kühn once recorded with Coleman, one of his favourite musicians) ‘Researching Has No Limits’ and ‘Homogeneous Emotions’, the material comprises Kühn and Kruglov originals. Among the most interesting is Kühn's ‘Desert Flower’ that prompts some sensitive playing from both, and Kruglov's ‘Colourful Impressions’, where the saxophonist lives up to his reputation as one of Russia's foremost jazz musicians.
