The 1970s were heady days for jazz-rock and Coryell in particular. Feted worldwide, this is a live recording grabbed from Radio Bremen in Germany. The sound quality is subsequently better than many contemporary live recordings, as evidenced by the acoustic pieces, notably the Latin influenced solo ‘Julie La Belle’ which showcases Coryell's mix of the dramatic, romantic and just plain ecstatic. The recording was perfectly timed to showcase material from the band's debut Introducing The Eleventh House and the upcoming The Other Side. Many songs are taken at a thunderous lick, but with Mouzon behind the kit grace and space wasn't ever an option. However, Coryell just manages to keep control, especially on the ‘Suite’, which has enough structure and dynamic shifts to keep its shape and our interest. The ‘Suite’ also gives space to Lawrence's horn, which not surprisingly reeks of Miles' reverb rich sound, but hey, that's no bad thing. Of its time, yes, but not entirely without interest today.
