This is the ideal complement to the Last Swing with Ireland session that Angel Air identify as Coryell’s last recording. Much of that material turns up on this intimate club set using the same doughty rhythm section.
So ‘In a Sentimental Mood’ is reprised, dedicated to Jim Hall, and there’s something of Hall’s melodic swing in the guitarist’s approach, a quality not always associated with Coryell. Likewise the Stravinsky quote from the studio recording heralds ‘Someday My Prince Will Come.’ But the benefits of a live recording include hearing the great man speak, thanking his Irish rhythm section in Japanese and heaping fulsome praise on heroes like Wes Montgomery (though Coryell’s version of ‘Bumpin’ on Sunset’ is chocka with a distorted rock edge), Steve Swallow (a celebratory ‘Good Citizen Swallow’) and Paco de Lucia (a meandering 12 string take on Ravel’s ‘Bolero’). An unexpected treat is a bonus song from Tracey Coryell, whom Larry introduces with great affection. This ‘blowing’ set is poignant for these personal touches and is an affectionate recollection of the man so soon to be no longer with us.
