Gardony is Hungarian. He started out classically-trained, but then discovered progressive rock (the influence is sometimes still there in his two-handed approach), blues and, later, jazz. Though he graduated in his birth country, he eventually got a full scholarship to Berklee. He formed a trio with Lockwood and Israel, which is still going strong after several releases on Sunnyside. This live date with three saxophonist guest stars was actually recorded at the Berklee Performance Centre in Boston. Bill Pierce's history includes long stints with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and the Tony Williams group, while Braden has some 20 leader-albums to his credit, many of them on Criss Cross. Strickland is mainly featured on bass clarinet, particularly on ‘Motherless Child’ and the haunting West African-derived ‘New Song’, which Gardony had previously recorded on one of his trio albums, but now in a longer form. ‘Breakout’ opens with an extended but interesting drum solo by veteran Israel, who is excellent throughout. Three of the tracks are over 12 minutes long but don't outstay their welcome, with Pierce and Braden enjoying their return to recording.
