Saxophonist Laurie Jacobs has made a tidy contribution to British jazz life, not least by establishing Peterborough Jazz Club in 1992. This is his first album as leader, though not his first to be released. It was first produced for promotional use in 2003. Since then, Jacobs has recorded and issued two CDs, Double Standards and Full Steam Ahead!!!; now he's seen fit to put out that first recording for public consumption. And it proves to be an interesting little time capsule, since it consists almost entirely of material associated with Michael Brecker and Kenny Garrett that first surfaced in the late 1990s. What you get then is a summation of end-of-twentieth-century saxophone cool. Jacobs has smartly transposed Brecker's parts from tenor to alto, and Garrett's from alto to soprano, to give the tunes fresh attack. Though in taking on such a repertoire they're necessarily measuring himself against masters: Jacobs and his sturdy collaborators emerge from the comparison with honour intact.
