The back end of the inner sleeve quotes John Coltrane: “You've got to look back at the old things and see them in a new light”. The “old things” that tenor saxophonist Leo Richardson looks back to are the prime cuts of small group modern jazz that were recorded in the late 1950s. The all-original set opens with a twisty-themed blues and an early bass solo for Mark Lewandowski and continues with the soul jazz groove of ‘Demon E’. There's a boogaloo, a sultry ballad and a viciously up-tempo title track that rekindles the spirit of Horace Silver. The tempo-changing ‘Mambo’ hints at new lights, and is the standout track, while ‘Mr Skid’, featuring guest Alan Skidmore, captures the lope of Coltrane's classic quartet, and delivers the chase promised in the album's title. Though Richardson doesn't push the idiom's well-established parameters, he has a satisfyingly meaty tenor sax tone, is rhythmically aware and pays attention to the details of a phrase irrespective of tempo, thereby bringing his well-constructed compositions to life. ‘Elisha's Song’ is a lovely ballad, the soul-jazz phrases are genuinely soulful and the speedy lines bounce with intelligence and vigour. An astute and swinging rhythm section and on-song guest trumpeter Quentin Collins complete this assured debut from a fast maturing UK saxophonist.
