The recordings under the Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic imprimatur represent highlights from the annual season of concerts held at the Kammermusiksaal of the Berlin Philharmonie curated by Siegfried Loch, the boss of ACT records. Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic III features the Polish pianist Leszek Możdżer who produces a set that leans towards his classical affiliations, opening by giving ‘Etude No. 2’ by his fellow countryman Witold Lutosławski a formal reading. Danielsson is introduced on ‘Praying’, and throughout he plays an influential role, both in musical dialogue with the pianist and as a frequent soloist. The duets continue with Możdżer's ‘Follow My acklights’ with Danielson again featured, before introducing the Atom String Quartet on the longest performance of the set, a 12 minute performance of the pianist's ‘Love Pastas', a classically oriented piece, albeit with light piano extemporisation over sustained strings. ‘Na 7’ is a feature for the Atom String Quartet, which includes what we take to be episodes of violin extemporisation, which was warmly received by the audience. On Lars Danielsson's ‘Africa’ percussionist Zohar Fresco finally gets a look in with some light patterings to add colour to Możdżer's and Danielsson's solo exchanges. ‘Gsharim’ is a bit of a feature for Fresco and Danielsson. It's all very pleasant and well executed, but by the final track, Krzysztof Lenczowski's ‘Winter Song’, I was still waiting for something to happen.
