This follow-up to the 2008 debut Country Dances extends Leverton Fox's conception of electro-acoustic improv that's heavy on real-time electronics. Original electronicist Matt Groom is now replaced by Isambard Khroustaliov – an alias used by Sam Britton of electronica duo Icarus – and you can certainly hear some of Icarus' twitchy, glitchy palette in here. On ‘Solitary Wasps,’ Britton chucks in some disconnected hard-core Gabber Techno beats, while on tracks like ‘The Human Arm’ and ‘Woodbelly’ trumpet and drums are subjected to rough, metallic processing, like an industrial free-jazz unit being ripped apart in the jaws of dangerous machinery. But there's a great deal of subtlety at play too. ‘Undecillion’ is a soundscape of distant roars and tactile squelches, hung on an unhurried heartbeat, like music made within the body at a cellular level. And, on ‘Le Tombeau de Monsieur Whippy’, Tim Giles’ fleeting polyrhythms folded into shimmering sci-fielectronica conjure the idea of Elvin Jones jamming with Tangerine Dream.
