Pianist-composer Lisa Hilton has been recording regularly for her own label Ruby Slippers since the late 1990s. Her jazz piano trio oozes the kind of cool, sleepy vibe often associated with her home in California, with blues melodies and the easy-going sway of Brazilian bossa being the essential ingredients. Legendary chamber bop pianist John Lewis might well be a key influence but Hilton has more of a classical concert pianist's legato phraseology than a straightahead jazz pianist's swing. There's a touch of Hollywood here too, perhaps a theme to a cool spy movie; starkly-toned chamber blues passages are slightly reminiscent of film composer David Shire's piano musings on Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation. All tracks are originals aside from a rendition of Cole Porter's ‘I've Got You Under My Skin' on which Hilton does very well to keep the listener engaged considering she takes the theme twice through succinctly with virtually no extemporisation. Although the playing is very assured, for some it will lack rhythmic intensity. For others it might just be the kind of musical tonic that keep thoughts about more worldly matters at bay.
