It's a family affair: Signals finds Germany's von Schlippenbach, who founded the Globe Unity Orchestra back in 1966, joined by his Japanese pianist wife and DJ son. Even Lovens – the ‘+1’ of the group title – is a kind of honorary uncle, having worked with von Schlippenbach since the early 1970s. Given the double whammy of von Schlippenbach and Takase, it is no surprise that the piano playing on Signals is superb. The drumming, too, is highly sensitive, although relatively low-profile: Lovens gets to show what he can do with a well-placed cymbal chime. The inclusion of Illvibe, though by some margin the youngest musician here, actually seems somewhat dated: a throwback to the 1990s, post-Us3 era in which a DJ was de rigeur. Still, Illvibe is more Philip Jeck or Otomo Yoshihide than DMC scratch champion and his more atmospheric contributions to tracks such as ‘Waterrun 1’ are highly effective.
