When Sam Rapley’s languid tenor sax eases in over the light touch rhythms from Tom Herbert’s bass guitar and Ben Brown’s drumming you feel this is going to be a ‘kick off your shoes’ kind of album. That’s the opening track 'Fallout' and the set closes in equally graceful style with 'Heddon Street', Greg Sanders’ lazy guitar combining with ultra-sultry sax in a Southern Soul payout. In between, however, there’s a fair bit of variety – the bossa bounce of 'Vicentina' with its Getz-y tone, the Caribbean lilt of 'Greatfields' and the jaunty African guitar of the title track - reflecting Lophae main man/composer Sanders’ eclectic discography.
The playing has a calm restraint throughout, especially on more closely composed numbers like 'Family Tree' with guest trumpeter Yelfris Valdez synched into Rapley’s sax and Sanders own measured solo. The elegiac ballad 'Dedication to David T' avoids sentimentality to catch the wistfulness of loss with great economy, largely thanks to Sanders’ careful composition and Rapley’s keen melodic judgement. 'Negative Blues' stands out, its more complex cross rhythms and bubbling bass creating a restrained Afrobeat showcase for Sanders’ elegant guitar. The track exemplifies the Lophae quartet’s capabilities as a tight group with impeccable timing and sensitive collaborative interplay.
