For his latest studio recording, Italian bass player Lorenzo Feliciati teams up with fellow countryman and drummer Michele Rabbia on an improvisational adventure that occasionally trips into the realms of ECM spiked psychedelia. Antikythera is apparently the name of an ancient Greek astronomical prediction device, and the music here is equally spaced-out and far reaching – with Feliciati squeezing out lush Jaco Pastorius styled passages of reverberating bass, while Rabbia’s drum and electronics attack adds sensual spice to the session. The spirit of electric period Miles Davis is also summoned up through Cuong Vu’s breathy trumpet refrains, while UK sax player Andy Sheppard adds extra colour to an already loaded musical palette for the lively ‘223 Teeth’. Elsewhere, ‘Prochronistic’ is more experimental, where a symphony of hissing sounds, electronics and near-rock elements burns through the already established fusion jazz vibe to leave its own indelible mark.
