Burton impresses here as he does throughout, less the fire-and-brimstone player of the Mingus Big Band but more the substantial all-rounder: his ballad treatment of ‘You’re Looking At Me’ is like a master-class in tempered handling of a theme. Nelson is similarly effective on ‘A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing’, Burton sitting out, Hazeltine embellishing but not hampering while ‘Dewey Square’ is taken as a stroll, Burton echoing McLean and Coltrane in his solo but never straining, Hazeltine responding inventively. The final piece ‘G’ by Hayes and Douglas is what the bassist calls ‘a Kansas City Barbecue Style Blues’ – good for him and fine for this listener, its feel-good groove rounding out a very satisfying second album. This feels like a band of brothers, their choices inspirational, their compatibility palpable. A natural for Ronnie Scott’s on this showing.
