One of James Brown's revered hornmen has amassed an impressive solo discography since the 1970s, and this latest release, his 16th studio set, shows that he remains an important part of living black music history. The epitome of funky saxophone Parker remains a compelling soloist, with his crisp, staccato phrasing having influenced many jazz musicians over the years, but he is in his element here, on what is a grand celebration of the art of ‘the one.’ More to the point, Maceo is playing music by giants with whom he's had the opportunity to work during an illustrious career – The Meters, Aretha Franklin, Dr John and Prince. Rhythmically, things lean mostly towards the particularly tasty slow and hot sizzle of New Orleans, as the likes of Ivan Neville, Nikki Glaspie and Tony Hall, as well as other Crescent City musicians, are all on hand. Anthems such as ‘Just Kissed My Baby’, ‘Rocksteady’ and ‘The Other Side Of The Pillow’ are very smartly rendered, though the highlight is one of Maceo's own classics, ‘Cross The Track.’ It is given a heavy low end and extra sassiness in the wah-wah department to make it as relevant to dancefloors in 2020 as it was in the days when DJs were digging in the crates looking for Maceo and the perfect beat.
