The CD of the 2012 Detroit Jazz Festival must have sold reasonably well enough for Mack Avenue to release one for last year's. The Super Band features quite a few (but not all) of the label's leaders. Everyone acquits themselves with appropriate distinction and the varied material gives each at least one featured item. There are tunes by Wolf, Jones, Chick Corea, Allen, Ellington and Gillespie and some of the most inspired moments come from the solos by Burton and newcomer Warren Wolf (equally energetic on vibes and marimba) on the Corea compositions ‘Chick's Tune’ (originally on a Blue Mitchell Blue Note) and ‘Senor Mouse’, which both vibists had recorded 39 years apart! Particularly appealing is Sean Jones' ‘Of Mars and Venus’, on which he plays flugel with much sensitivity. Only 35, his work sounds increasingly more mature on every recording. Whalum's contributions are very soulful, while Diehl is an acquired taste – at times sounding like Errol Garner crossed with Ellington. Overall the band plays with spirit and polish, kicked along by sold bass from musical director Whitaker and broken-up drumming by Allen. One leader conspicuous by her absence is the talented alto saxophonist Tia Fuller, who is constantly busy as MD for Beyoncé's backing band. She might have added some interesting extra flair.
