Bringing together a host of great vocalists and guest musicians from Brazil, Sweden, the US and UK, Souls sees Swedish multi-instrumentalist Magnus Lindgren stepping outside of his comfort zone. At the suggestion of the album's producer and bass player, Ira Coleman, Lindgren switches his focus from instrumental to vocal music. The result? A collection of instantly memorable songs with a distinctly retro feel – think trilling flutes, rippling Rhodes and woody Wurlies (all played by Lindgren himself, who also contributes sax and clarinet). Recorded at New York's Clubhouse Studios, the opening title track features an understated, surprisingly dreamy performance by Gregory Porter. In addition to Porter, who shines on two other impressive cuts, ‘Small Stuff’ and ‘Broken Heart’, it's an absolute pleasure to hear the great Ivan Lins on his self-penned ‘She Walks This Earth’, while Swedish newcomer Anna Christoffersson makes quite an impression on ‘Rainy Day’ (with Mark Reilly) and ‘Change All the Time’. There's some ear-catching textural detail on the album's three instrumentals, too, with percussionist Rhani Krija outstanding throughout.
