From the mid-period of his career, this reissue finds Waldron settled into his lengthy European sojourn, performing live at the Mastersingers Hall in Nuremberg (there's got to be a post-Wagnerian joke here). Not a regular group, as far as I know, it features a quintet with two other expatriates in Blairman and the excellent Lacy, plus highly-rated German trumpeter Schoof and versatile Swiss bassist Eckinger. Apart from a ballad with the seemingly inappropriate title ‘Russian Melody’, the material is fairly minimal, improv being based on unchanging vamps and, apart from Lacy, not a great deal of inspiration. A little of this can go a long way, yet the collective energy of the band (rather than the polite audience) carries you along. Enja, though, haven't stretched themselves in the presentation department, printing a contemporary and cursory review and not mentioning Waldron's later career, or indeed the inclusion of a track unissued until the CD version, namely ‘Hurray For Herbie’, that follows on directly from ‘Russian Melody’.
