Here’s a treat, but for unexpected reasons in that it’s great to hear the largely unsung Jim Watson given so much space. The title track has him all funky’n’sweet on Rhodes behind a typically loose-limbed Katché groove. Then he steals the show on ‘Trickle’, starting with an austere piano figure that is doubled on sax, then it grows from, indeed, a trickle into a gorgeous Watson solo with Katché restrained yet urgent, even at such a slow tempo. Each track, even the groove pop of ‘Rolling’ has its secrets and delights, not least Landgren’s trombone, which graces five of Unstatic’s cuts. As well as Landgren, there are contrasting generations of Scandinavians on board. Brunborg, ex-Masqualero and long time Katché buddy, burns bright, while Wang’s sonorous tones catch the ear as does her vox over, yes, you guessed, cascades of Watson keys. An album that seems slight on first hearing, Unstatic yields it joys gently.
