At this stage, it’s difficult to pinpoint who was the first person to propose the idea of music conceived as the soundtrack to an imaginary film – but it’s a trope we’ve heard a thousand times. Still, that doesn’t stop this quartet of young Danish musicians from having another pop at it. To ram the point home, their debut CD even comes housed in a DVD box with movie poster-style artwork. But, if this were from a movie it would be incidental music rather than the theme tune. Maraton present 15 short vignettes, ranging from less than a minute to five minutes in length, which seek to evoke different atmospheres, as evidenced by titles such as ‘Den Japanske Have’ (‘The Japanese Garden’) and ‘De Islandske Fjelde’ (‘The Icelandic Mountains’). The trouble is, without the clues in the titles, you’d be hard pressed to recognise these locations – or to identify any significant differences between them. Ethereal synths waft gently by, a tasteful sax bleats in an easy middle register, drums or tuned percussion pitter-patter gently. It’s possible the artists are imagining a film about how everywhere and everything on planet earth is equally dull – in which case, it’s a job well done.
