Husband-and-wife duos are rare enough in jazz – but one that teams trumpet with harp must be unique. For the past 26 years, Printup has been a mainstay of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra's trumpet section and as such has been a regular presence when the band has appeared there. Not always afforded much solo space in their concerts, he has built a fruitful association with Nils Winther's SteepleChase label, often fronting his own sessions and playing as a sideman on others. Also, perhaps remarkably, there has been at least one recording with wife Riza on harpsichord; here, though, it is her classically-aligned harp playing that is the perfect complement to his stately trumpet.
While it may be useful in shorthand terms to call this chamber jazz, it is certainly intimate yet quite broad-ranging too, with a nicely balanced choice of repertoire. Thad Jones's ‘A Child Is Born’ is lyrical as is ‘The Nearness of You’ and while there are no tear-ups, much else is spirited and pleasing. What emerges throughout is the poise of Printup's trumpet playing, wonderfully centred, tonally strong but never overwhelming, with harpist Riza playing in surprisingly linear fashion, doubtless making many pedal adjustments as she does so, but never sounding flustered or short of an idea.
I'm inclined to call this a masterclass in trumpet/harp interplay, the improvisations almost academic in their thoughtfulness, the trumpet tone never boppish or antique, each piece executed without bravura; the overall effect being one of benign virtuosity.
