Mazur’s 10-piece band is an invigorating embodiment of the ideal of the transnational improvising ensemble, with its all female line-up producing work of unflagging energy over this set of 16 concise pieces. Mostly drawn from Nordic countries, of which the leader’s native Denmark looms large, the musicians play songs with an earthy Afro-Latin feel, and the clanging bells, rumbling marimbas and rousing chants are marshalled with impressive discipline to ensure that the tunes don’t tip over into bombast. In fact, Mazur retains some of the textural shimmer of the classic mid-1970s work of Don Cherry, Zawinul and Flora Purim, but crafts a wide-ranging vocabulary that has a real sense of ceremony and ritual as well as festive uplift. Many of the pieces boast sharp polyrhythmic dynamism, and the writing, mostly by Mazur, but with contributions from saxophonists Lotte Anker and Sissel Petterson, has a billowing melodiousness that enhances the zest of the music.
