New Zealander de Clive-Lowe is a veteran of London's broken beat scene but now based in LA, where this live EP was recorded. His pensive piano leads into live sampling of his acoustic quartet, an often tiresome technique discreetly deployed, leaving it uncertain how much of a bracing Josh Johnson alto solo is wholly live. Sun Ra's ‘The Golden Lady’ is where it all comes together, sounding like the Forbidden Planet soundtrack sinking Scotches at a jumpy film noir bar. Electronic squelches meet nervous skitters of piano over softly padding bass, till Johnson's flute leads the climactic charge into a swirl of samples. De Clive-Lowe is retrenching to first principles at this point in a varied career, the sometime DJ more interested in pianist Sun Ra's swing than sketching an updated EDM Saturn. As a full-blooded take on Ahmad Jamal's ‘Swahililand’ fades out when it's barely begun, you're left wanting a little more.
